Irresistible Choice Of Exotic Courses

Sydney Morning Herald

Wednesday June 24, 1992

Ikebana, the Japanese theory of floral arrangement dating back more than 600 years, is one of the courses on offer in the winter term at Sydney Community College.

The course will be taken by Evelyn Pigot, a master tutor from the modern Sogetsu school which is deeply rooted in tradition yet which aims to respond to the needs of the age.

Sogetsu Ikebana was introduced to Japan in 1927 by Sofu Teshigahara who believed the art should be both creative and enjoyable. He developed a systematic method to make Ikebana accessible to everyone.

After mastering the basic arranging techniques of the several styles embraced by Ikebana, students are trained to express their own ideas freely. The three points of heaven, man and Earth influence the distinctive shape of Ikebana arrangements, which can incorporate unlikely materials such as wire, plastic, paper, and cardboard boxes.

The classes will be held on Mondays starting from July 20 at Balmain High School. For eight 2 1/2-hour sessions the fee is $75.

Sydney Community College offers 200 other courses including films and film making, home video use, dressmaking, dog obedience, yoga, shiatsu and Swedish massage, picture framing, tools of trade for the handywoman, languages, computing, creative writing, photography, wine appreciation, choosing a new career, and dealing with difficult people. Inquiries: 555 7411.
